Auto-Linking Assistant (PRO): internal & external links

3 min read

Use the Auto-Linking Assistant to discover missing internal links, add high-quality external links and update your content from a single screen.

1. What the Auto-Linking Assistant does #

The Auto-Linking Assistant is a PRO tool that helps you improve your internal and external linking structure without editing each post manually.

From one screen you can:

  • See which posts have few or many links.
  • Analyze a specific post to detect good anchor phrases.
  • Get suggestions for:
    • Internal links to other posts on your site.
    • External links to relevant sources (when Google APIs are configured).
  • Insert links directly into the content with a click.

The goal is to make it easier to:

  • Strengthen your internal linking for SEO and user navigation.
  • Add a few, relevant external references where appropriate.

All changes stay under your control: you decide which links to insert.

PRO only
This screen is available when your SEO Magic license is active.
Without a license, you’ll see an upgrade notice instead of the tool.

2. Where to find the Auto-Linking Assistant #

  1. In your WordPress dashboard, go to SEO Magic → Auto-Linking.
  2. You’ll see a table with your content and several controls:
  • Search bar – search posts by title.
  • Filter buttons – quickly filter by post type (Posts, Pages, custom post types, etc. based on your active Scan Content Types).
  • Table columns (typical layout):
    • Title – the post title.
    • Words – approximate number of words in the content.
    • Internal – count of existing internal links in that post.
    • External – count of existing external links.
    • Actions – a button to analyze and edit links for that post.

You can sort by columns and use the pagination at the bottom to browse through your content.

3. Analyzing links for a specific post #

To work on a particular post:

  1. Use the search bar or filters to find it in the table.
  2. In the Actions column, click Analyze for that row.

SEO Magic will:

  • Load the current version of the content.
  • Detect potential anchor phrases inside the text.
  • Request link suggestions based on:
    • Your existing posts (for internal links).
    • Your configured Google search settings (for external suggestions, if available).

Under the analyzed row you’ll see a suggestions panel with:

  • The link phrase (anchor text candidate).
  • A list of suggested targets for that phrase.
  • An Insert button next to each suggestion.
  • A field to paste a custom URL if you prefer your own destination.

You can review all suggestions before inserting anything.

4. Adding internal and external links #

For each link phrase you have several options:

  • Insert internal link
    • Choose one of the suggested internal targets.
    • Click Insert.
    • The assistant updates the post content so that the anchor text becomes a link to that internal URL.
  • Insert external link (when available)
    • If external suggestions are enabled and configured, you’ll also see external targets.
    • Click Insert to link the anchor text to that external URL.
  • Use a custom URL
    • Use the custom URL field to paste any URL you want.
    • Click Insert to create the link using the same anchor text.

To avoid over-linking:

  • The assistant skips phrases that are already linked in your content.
  • You decide how many suggestions to apply for each post.

The changes are applied directly to the stored post content when you click Insert.

5. How suggestions are generated #

At a high level, the Auto-Linking Assistant uses:

  • The current content of the post (to find anchor candidates).
  • The active post types from your Settings → Scan Content Types (for internal targets).
  • Your Google API configuration (for optional external suggestions):
    • Google Search API Key.
    • Programmable Search Engine ID.

Internal suggestions look for other posts on your site whose titles or topics relate to the link phrase.

External suggestions are based on the Programmable Search Engine ID you configured in SEO Magic settings.
If Google APIs are not configured, the assistant will work with internal links only.

The exact algorithm and prompts are handled inside SEO Magic; you only see the final suggestions.

6. Recommended workflow #

A practical way to use the Auto-Linking Assistant:

  1. Prioritize content
    • Open SEO Magic → Auto-Linking.
    • Use filters and sorting to find posts with few internal links.
  2. Analyze and link
    • Click Analyze in the Actions column for one post.
    • Review each link phrase and its suggestions.
    • Insert a small number of relevant internal links.
    • Optionally add 1–2 external links to relevant sources.
  3. Repeat as needed
    • Go back to the table and continue with other posts, starting with important or high-traffic content.

Tip:
Combine this with the Metadata and Multimedia tools:
first improve your link structure, then polish titles, descriptions and image metadata.

7. Notes and limitations #

  • The Auto-Linking Assistant only modifies links inside the post content.
It does not change SEO titles, meta descriptions or image metadata (those are handled in the Metadata and Multimedia tools).
  • The tool only works on content types you have enabled in Settings and that your user role is allowed to edit.
  • External suggestions depend on your Google API configuration.
If the quota is exceeded or the API is not set up, it’s normal to see only internal suggestions.

For analyzing backlinks from other websites pointing to your site, use the Backlink Audit screen (documented separately).
